The Student Experience

Master Teacher Arden Sugarman specializes in building healthy techniques in budding, seasoned and professional voices. If you are actively performing in concert and staged productions, and competing in vocal competitions, or using your spoken voice and want to take mastery to the next level, Arden can guide you toward success. High school juniors and seniors are thoroughly prepared with appropriate repertoire for college and conservatory auditions; college students who are planning on transferring also receive professional preparation.

Excellent results are shown in the number of SVS students who are cast in leading roles with local, regional and professional productions of theatre, musical theatre and opera. Several have been finalists and winners in the formerly-annual Beach Blanket Babylon Scholarship for the Arts in Voice, Acting and Dance.

Current and former students have matriculated in undergraduate and graduate programs at Carnegie Mellon University, University of Michigan, NYU/Tisch, Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University, Moores School of Music, University of Houston, Chapman University, Emerson College, Boston Conservatory, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Kenyon College, and many others.

SVS students have participated in summer programs, including: MPulse, Arts Bridge, SongFest, CAP21, Hawai’i Performing Arts Festival, Marin Summer Theater, Tanglewood, ArtsBridge, and CHERUBS.

Each student has a unique login/password that provides access to a student page on the SVS website. Study materials include: MP3s of vocal exercises, exercises notated on manuscript paper, and articles and handouts related to vocal studies. Arden records and digitally sends accompaniments to songs and repertoire being practiced.

Arden actively participates in helping students build appropriate repertoire for performance and audition purposes. SVS houses a large library of vocal music, opera scores, anthologies and sheet music in a variety of genres. Arden strongly encourages and helps her students explore new repertoire and genres as a regular part of their work at SVS.

SVS students work hard and intensely, with excellent results, but lessons with Arden are fun! She effectively shares and communicates her love, passion and knowledge for music and the potential of the human voice.
